Date: Jun 24, 2025

Operating forklifts safely is essential for workplace safety and productivity. Follow these key steps to reduce risks and ensure secure operations:

      1. Get Proper Training and Certification

  • All operators must complete comprehensive forklift training covering theory and practical skills.

  • Training should include understanding load capacities, safety regulations, and equipment operation. Certification is required to legally operate a forklift, ensuring operators are qualified to handle these machines safely.

  2. Conduct Pre - operation Inspections

  • Before each shift, check brakes, steering, tires, lights, and hydraulic systems for wear or damage.

  • Inspect forks and load - handling attachments for proper condition and securement. Address any issues immediately to prevent malfunctions during operation.

  3. Manage Loads Correctly

  • Never exceed the forklift’s rated load capacity.

  • Center and evenly distribute the load on the forks. Secure irregular or loose items with straps or chains.

  • Be aware of load height and width, as they can affect balance and visibility, posing risks if not managed properly.

  4. Drive Safely

  • Adjust seat, mirrors, and controls for a clear view before starting.

  • Sound the horn at intersections, blind spots, or when approaching pedestrians.

  • Travel at a safe speed, especially when turning, on uneven surfaces, or in congested areas. Avoid sudden stops, starts, and sharp turns to prevent load shifts.

  5. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

  • Watch for pedestrians, other vehicles, and obstacles in the work area.

  • Pay attention to floor conditions like wet spots or debris, which can impact stability.

  • Regularly use mirrors and look over your shoulder to detect potential hazards.

  6. Handle Ramps and Inclines Carefully

  • When on ramps or inclines, drive forward with the load facing uphill to maintain stability.

  • Keep a slow, steady speed and engage the parking brake if you need to stop.

  7. Follow Post - operation Procedures

  • Park the forklift in a designated area away from traffic and pedestrian paths.

  • Lower the forks to the ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  • Report any damage, malfunctions, or safety concerns to your supervisor immediately.

By adhering to these safety measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and create a safer working environment when operating forklifts.
